The Chaos Emeralds(カオスエメラルド Kaosu Emerarudo?) are powerful, ancient relics with mystical powers and abilities. In its debut in Sonic the Hedgehog(game), there were only six Chaos Emeralds, which also was apparent in most Master System/Game Gear titles. But in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the number has become canonically seven in the franchise. Also during this time, the Chaos Emeralds were originally round-cut and smaller in size. However, ever since Sonic the Fighters, the Chaos Emeralds are larger and contain a brilliant diamond-cut; officially resembling the once known Super Emeralds.

Story

The Chaos Emeralds, along with the Master Emerald, have existed for countless years. It is historically known throughout earlier centuries the Chaos Emeralds were misused for malicious purposes, which spurred the gods to create the Master Emerald to control and balance its power. The eight emeralds resided within the Emerald Shrine in a place identified as Angel Island. Ancient civilizations such as the Echidnas always revered the Chaos Emeralds and often said the incantation,

"The servers are the seven Chaos. Chaos is power, power is enriched by the heart. The heart is the controller. The controller serves to unify the Chaos."

However, it was not long before history repeated itself by chief Pachacamac and his followers of the Knuckles Clan. Their reverence of the eight emeralds became lust for its power and attempted to take them from the shrine. Their efforts were quickly halted by the shrine's guardian name Chaos, whom was enraged by their actions and annihilated the entire race with the use of the Chaos Emeralds. This event caused the emeralds to officially earn it name as it relates to the definition of the mayhem caused by the guardian.

Powers and Abilities

Each Chaos Emerald possesses an unlimited amount of powerful energy that can be used and produced in various ways. One is generating its power from a person's thoughts and feelings in the form of positive or negative energy called, Chaos Energy. This energy allows the Chaos Emeralds to be recharged if it is ever depleted for any reason. In addition, Chaos Energy can be used to perform miraculous feats like reviving the recently deceased or displaying visions. Properties of this trait transfers into another type of power known as Chaos Control.

Chaos Control grants a user to manipulate time and space. With space manipulation, the user is able to instantaneously teleport his/her self from location to another; including to a different timeline. The user will also be able to transport others and objects with him/her, though a vast amount of energy may be required depending upon the distance of the teleportation. With time manipulation, the user can slow or stop time completely; causing everything and everyone else to cease movement. The functionality of Chaos Control requires the user to be at least in close proximity of a Chaos Emerald to induce this ability.

The popularly known ability of the Chaos Emeralds is empowering machinery or/and living beings. When a user collects all Chaos Emeralds, he or she is able to transform into a super state. In the super state, a person's natural skills and abilities will drastically increase along with gaining extra ones like immunity to harmful objects. However, a person's super form does not last forever due to it requires Gold Rings to maintain it.

The Chaos Emeralds also have magnetic characteristics with each one able to attract and repel each other; thus explaining why Tails was able to pinpoint Dr.Eggman's location on the Space Colony ARK. The massive power deriving from each emerald allows people to easily track its whereabouts with a radar.
