The Master Emerald(マスターエメラルド Masutā Emerarudo?) is a large, mystical green relic with a brilliant diamond-cut. This prominent object is currently guarded by Knuckles the Echidna and the source of Angel Island's ability to float. The primary purpose for its existence is to balance the power of the Chaos Emeralds. Its first appearance is in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and continues to be relevant throughout the franchise.

Story

The origins of the Master Emerald is shrouded in mystery. What is known is the gods created it after witnessing the heinous crimes of many generations. The gods promptly bestowed the Master Emerald the ability to negate the power of the Chaos Emeralds. This balance forever established the link between the eight emeralds, which also enticed the Echidna race to take the jewels for themselves. However, they were severely punished before accomplishing their goal. The gods reconstructed the land and sent everything in it to the sky.

Powers & Abilities

With the infinite power it possesses, the Master Emerald's properties is both similar and superior to the Chaos Emeralds. It has the ability to influence the position of a place, which is shown of Angel Island's stability in the air. It is also demonstrated the Master Emerald is able to suppress Chaos; the God of Destruction. Its power can also be harnessed by its user to initiate a super form; this was achieved by Mecha Sonic in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Although it mainly serves to negate the Chaos Emeralds, the Master Emerald can also enhance their power. The only ones able to talk to and command to unlock the true power of the Master Emerald are Knuckles, Chaos, and Tikal.
