First Appearance Sonic and the Secret Rings
Description Seven rings varying in different colors and emotions.
Purpose .
  • Empowering beings
  • Binding together the world of the world of the Arabian Nights

World Rings (世界リング Sekai Ringu?) are the seven magical variant of Rings combined with properties equivalent to the Chaos Emeralds. Each color represents a certain emotion of Blue means Prayers(Hope), Purple means Sadness, Red means Rage, Green means Hatred, Yellow means Joy, Cyan means Pleasure, and White means Wishes(Desire). The World Rings internally bind together the World of the Arabian Nights and grants special powers for anyone who seeks it, but at a grave cost. These magical Rings are the key plot element in Sonic and the Secret Rings. World Rings can also be seen in Sonic and the Black Knight and Sonic Rivals 2, but have no plot relevance.

Powers & Traits

A World Ring itself can affect the environment such as the blue ring creating storms and the white ring opening the doors to Erazor Djinn's palace. Although its origin is within the world of the Arabian Nights, natives cannot physically touch these rings since it will pass through them like a ghost. But those who live outside of the Arabian Nights can touch these rings easily. Contrary to the Chaos Emeralds, not all of the World Rings need to be collected for a person to use its power, though it will not be at its full potential.

With the enormous power the World Rings possesses and what it represents, a person is able to transform into a super form heavily influenced by the primary emotion(s) he or she feels. For someone to unlock the full power and have complete control of the World Rings, the life of the collector of the rings must be sacrificed as a part of a ritual. However, if another life is sacrificed instead of the collector, the ritual will be somewhat fulfilled, but the user will be unable to control the transformation they grant. An example of this is when Erazor Djinn killed Shahra instead of Sonic(who collected the rings) and transformed into the incomplete, but also monstrous Alf Layla wa-Layla.

Naturally, Sonic can use the magical rings to transform into a super state, but he does not become Super Sonic this time. In response to Shahra's death, Sonic felt Rage, Sadness, and Hatred. The corresponding World Rings departed from Alf Layla wa-Layla and were absorbed into Sonic; transforming him into Dark Spine.
